 How the Online Classes Work

Every kid is different, and as such, they will advance faster or slower than their peers. If a student is forced to go faster than they are able to, they will develop gaps in their education. Likewise, if a student can progress faster than the class, they might become bored and lose interest in the topic. In either case, it's crucial that students proceed at an ideal pace for mastering reading.

With this in mind, we have created a 3-level program for our students. Unlike traditional classes, ours do not have specific start or stop dates. Students can join the class at any time, and once they’ve demonstrated mastery of the topic, they can advance to the next level without waiting for a new term or class to begin.

Likewise, if a student struggles and needs more time to master the material, they can stay for as long as they need. This is particularly helpful for those with learning disabilities or focus issues. As long as they remain respectful to their peers and the teachers, they are welcome to stay.

These classes are for students ages 8 - 18.

Class LEVEL 1

Introduction to Phonics

In this class, we study and practice phonics (sounds that letters make) and how to sound out words. Many students skip words, make guesses, or substitute them. This isn’t a typical class that simply covers long and short vowel sounds and any words that don’t follow these ‘rules’ are considered sight words, or rule breakers, or exceptions (different words for the same idea) that need to be memorized. Letters make far more sounds than we are typically taught. True sight words are almost non-existent. Our program was created to help students break bad habits and develop a more comprehensive understanding of phonics in as short of time as possible. Most students will spend about a month or two in this class before transitioning smoothly to Level 2 which focuses on comprehension and application of these phonics skills.

If a student masters the topic or already has a strong understanding of phonics, they can advance to Level 2 more quickly — sometimes after only a week in this phonics class.

Class LEVEL 2

Advance Phonics with the Declaration of Independence

In this class, we build on what students learned in the Level 1 and use the Declaration of Independence to improve their reading abilities.

Due to the high reading level of the Declaration, once students can read it, they will have the skills necessary to read almost anything else, including novels, textbooks, and historical documents — even young children can achieve this. By breaking the text down and explaining its meaning, children can understand almost anything, including the Declaration. We’ve had many young students fall in love with the Declaration once they learn how to understand it.

Students also learn how to look up words and grasp historical context, for older students, this includes talking about the grievances against the King, and why they are included in the Declaration of Independence. Younger children will be taught to ask a grown-up for help when looking up the words or ask questions about history, until they are old enough to safely research on their own. This class is where they gain confidence and begin becoming independent readers. Once students gain these skills, they will move onto Level 3.

Class LEVEL 3

Advanced Applied Phonics

This is a follow-up class to Level 2. Students will apply their skills and take turns reading from classic literature, such as The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jane Eyre, and other books that focus on historical periods or important topics like economics and how the world works. This is where they learn to read smoothly, analyze the topics, engage with the material, and become independent readers.

Who Are We?

  Meet Shaun and Jackie

Sure Foundation Reading is Owned and Founded by Jackie and Shaun.

Jackie has been teaching reading with phonics for over 25 years for various non-profits, private schools, and homeschool groups, while also doing private and group tutoring. Years ago, she recognized that many families turned to homeschooling when traditional schools failed to foster independent learning and struggled to teach students how to read beyond basic children's books.

But once homeschooled, these families often didn’t know where to turn; the resources they did find required a lot of time and effort to work, if they worked at all. Then they often turned to private schools for help, and once again, most did not have the tools or knowledge to assist these struggling kids. In short, public schools couldn’t help, homeschoolers couldn’t find how to help them, and private schools didn’t know how to help.

This led Jackie to take her teaching skills out of the house and into the world! She enlisted the help of her tech-savvy son, Shaun, to develop a website and help her create an online teaching system. This system was designed to scale her proven methods, enabling her to reach as many struggling children, teens, and adults as possible, no matter where they are in the world! Thus, Sure Foundation Reading was born!
